OUR VOLUNTEERS
At the Family Support Center of Ojochal our volunteers make all the difference to the families we help. They deliver food and vouchers, they check in on progress, they operate La Manita, our thrift shop, and they support our fundraising events.
Recognizing the contributions of these generous members of our community is one way to say Thank You!
Here is a profile of Jennifer Taylor!
Jenn has an amazing talent. She can work easily in English, Spanish and French! This is so valuable to the Family Support Center of Ojochal, where she provides translation services that make our communications accessible to the entire community.
A Canadian with a long career in aviation and related work in the Federal Government, Jenn discovered Costa Rica in 2006 and decided this was the go-to place for vacations after that. In 2012, retirement allowed for full-time residency in Ojochal. Jenn says, “I love living in Costa Rica and particularly in Ojochal. It’s a part of the world where the energy is quite magical and living so close to nature helps to calm my mind. I love being retired here, because I can be myself and feel accepted, no matter what I choose to do”.
Jenn’s career gave her access to French-language training, which she quickly used as the basis for learning Spanish. “After what I had been through learning French, it felt like Spanish was a breeze!”, she said.
Jenn loves volunteering. “It’s a chance to focus on something outside of myself. Ojochal being a small community, I get to immediately see the results of peoples’ volunteer efforts and their positive impacts on people’s lives.” Over the years, she has been part of El Sabor de Ojochal, Community Security Committee of Ojochal, the Ojochal ADI and the Ojochal Asada.
Jenn is currently living in Canada, but her heart and her energy remains here. Virtual volunteering is what we call it – Jenn continues to support us from afar. “Helping out comes in many different forms and the Family Support Center has done wonders in Ojochal; providing support for our families who are in need. I’m happy to be able to draw on my language skills to help in the community”.
