In April 2019, a local family suffered a traumatic accident when their boat caught fire while they were fishing. There was significant damage to the boat and both the father and mother suffered severe burns and other injuries. This family of 5 was left without the ability to work, and in need of care. FSCO found the family living in marginally acceptable housing which was probably fine when they were able to work, but at least in the short-term could not be maintained or repaired by them.
The FSCO is providing food vouchers to the family throughout their recovery, and with the help of volunteers arranged repairs to their home .
Beyond those urgent needs, returning the family to where they could once again make a living was FSCO’s priority. Fortunately the boat was not completely destroyed and the motor was in good condition. FSCO mounted a community campaign to cover the repair costs of $US1,000. We are thrilled to announce that as of July 10, the goal has been met, and the repairs to the boat are being completed.
This is a true example of the generosity of our community, and our ability to step up to support families in returning to independence.
