TeleTica profiles the FSCO!

The Family Support Center of Ojochal (FSCO), known by the local Tico community as El Banco de Alimentos began 5 years ago, when 4 Gringas and a Tica realized a local family was going hungry. Now with over 40 families on their roster they support an average of 7 families at any time with food vouchers.
Still very focused on the belief that no child should go to be hungry, over the past two years FSCO has expanded its mandate – supporting families to build a health community – through mentoring and skills development.
In August, Canal 7, a Costa Rican TV station recognized the importance FSCO was playing in the Ojochal community and produced a TeleTica segment on the Center’s work.
The piece features Chety and her family, the first to be assisted in 2014. Chety works hard to support her family, but continues to value periodic support from FSCO to keep them on the right track.
Also featured is one of the founding members of the Center, Diana Morales. Born and raised in Ojochal, Diana worked as a journalist in San Jose for a time before returning to Ojochal to be near her family and raise her son.
The piece ends with a visit to La Manita, the gently used items store operated by FSCO. The store accepts donations from across the Ballena area, and directs items to the families being supported. Surplus items are offered for sale to the public on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9 am to noon.
